Most trips to Saint-Martin begin with the same question: “where’s my car?” The island has two airports, and the right move depends on where you land. Here’s how to collect your vehicle stress-free, even if your flight arrives at night or late.
Two airports, two setups
Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM)
On the Dutch side, at Simpson Bay. This is the island’s main airport: nearly all long-haul international flights arrive here — Paris, Amsterdam, the major North American cities, the Caribbean hubs. It’s also the airport of famous Maho Beach, covered in Maho Beach Plane Spotting.
The terminal is mid-sized but can be swamped when several wide-bodies land in the late afternoon: queues at immigration, busy baggage belts. Allow 45 minutes to an hour between landing and being behind the wheel.
Grand-Case–Espérance Airport (SFG)
On the French side. Much smaller, mostly regional flights from Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy and neighbouring islands. Everything is compact: a few minutes between stepping off the plane and reaching the lot.
Always state your arrival airport when you book: the pickup point, and sometimes the price, depends on it.
Arriving at SXM: the three scenarios
After baggage claim and customs, follow the signs to the rental desks or the collection area. Depending on the company:
- Desk inside the terminal: you sign the contract there, then an agent walks you to the car in the adjacent lot.
- Shuttle to an off-site lot a few minutes away. The agent meets you at a marked pickup point outside.
- Kerbside handover: an agent waits with a name sign at the agreed spot (often the arrivals kerb or a nearby lot).
Have to hand, before you leave the plane: driving licence, passport, the main driver’s credit card, your confirmation number, and the company’s phone number.
Arriving at SFG
Simpler all round. Collection is usually on the small adjacent lot or at the drop-off right in front of the terminal. An agent meets you there at your flight time. If in doubt, call the number on your confirmation as soon as you have signal.
Night flight or delay: plan ahead
Long-haul flights from Europe often land in the late afternoon, but a delay can push pickup past dark — and driving at night in Saint-Martin takes care on the unlit roads.
Our advice:
- choose a company that tracks your flight number and adjusts the meeting time automatically — share it when you book;
- tell the company if you see a significant delay before departure;
- if you land late and aren’t comfortable driving at night, ask for next-morning delivery to your accommodation. Many agencies offer it, often free within a set radius. You take a taxi the first evening and collect the car rested, in daylight;
- keep an offline copy of your booking (a screenshot): airport Wi-Fi isn’t always reliable.
Reaching your accommodation: travel times
From SXM (outside rush hour):
| Destination | Approx. time |
|---|---|
| Simpson Bay, Maho | 5–10 min |
| Cole Bay, Cupecoy | 10–15 min |
| Philipsburg | 15–20 min |
| Marigot | 20–25 min |
| Grand Case | 25–30 min |
| Orient Bay, Cul-de-Sac | 35–45 min |
From SFG: Grand Case is 5 minutes away, Orient Bay about 15, Marigot about 20.
Add 15 to 30 minutes at rush hour, especially on the Simpson Bay – Cole Bay corridor and if the Simpson Bay swing bridge is open when you pass.
Set up your GPS before you leave the lot
Mobile coverage is good on the island, but street addresses are rarely used: many places are known by the name of the bay, the neighbourhood or the property. Before leaving the lot:
- enter the destination and check the suggested route (avoid “shortcuts” down dirt tracks);
- download the island’s offline map in your navigation app;
- note the neighbourhood name and a visible landmark (a nearby hotel, a beach, a roundabout).
On the way back
- Refuel — a station is within ten minutes of both airports.
- Plan to be at SXM 2.5 to 3 hours before a long-haul flight in high season, car return included. At SFG, 1 to 1.5 hours is enough for a regional flight.
- Take the photos of the car from every angle again (body, wheels, windscreen, interior) and insist on a signed return inspection before you leave. That document is what releases your deposit.
- Grab your things: chargers, sunglasses, purchases tucked into the door pockets.
In short
- SXM for long-haul, SFG for regional — state the airport when you book.
- Have licence, passport, credit card and confirmation number to hand as you leave the plane.
- Share your flight number: a good company adjusts the pickup time.
- Night flight? Consider next-morning delivery.
- On return: refuel, photos, signed inspection, plenty of margin before the flight.
