Saint-Martin works well as a one-day drive if you start early. Here’s a loop of about 70 km, clockwise from Marigot, with something to stop for at every stage and no rush. Adapt the order to your accommodation — if you’re staying on the Dutch side, run the loop the other way.
The plan
- Duration: a full day (leave around 8:30am, back around 6pm).
- Distance: about 70 km, but budget generously: slow roads, speed bumps and frequent stops. Pure driving time is around 2.5 hours; the rest is up to you.
- Direction: start with the north and east while the light is good on the windward coast, and save the western sunsets (the Lowlands) for last.
- What to bring: swimwear and towel, sunscreen, water, cash (euros and a few dollars), decent shoes for Fort Louis, a light windbreaker.
- Fuel: fill up the day before — there are few stations on the north-east side.
1. Marigot — 8:30am
The French capital. To do:
- the seafront market (busiest Tuesday and Saturday mornings): spices, fruit, crafts, small Creole food stalls;
- the walk up to Fort Louis (10–15 minutes, some steps) for the view over the bay, the marina and Anguilla opposite;
- a coffee on the harbour before heading north.
Park in the marked seafront lots; they fill quickly on market days.
2. Grand Case — 9:30am
A short stop: the boulevard, the calm beach, the fishing boats. Grand Case is the island’s food capital — pick a table (or a lolo) for dinner on the way back. If you have time, a quick swim off the village beach.
3. Cul-de-Sac and Pinel Island — 10:15am
From the Cul-de-Sac jetty, a 5-minute ferry reaches Pinel Island and its shallow lagoon — warm and clear (beach restaurants, loungers, kayaks on the island). Allow 1.5 to 2 hours if you take the boat.
If you don’t cross, the scenic road above Cul-de-Sac bay is worth a photo stop, with Pinel and Petite Clef in the background.
4. Orient Bay — 11:30am
The island’s biggest beach: a swim, lunch with your feet in the sand, some downtime under a lounger. This is the long stop of the day — allow at least 2 hours. Paid private lots behind the beach clubs.
5. Oyster Pond and Dawn Beach — 2:30pm
Heading back south, the Oyster Pond marina, straddling the French–Dutch border, then Dawn Beach, facing the sunrise with the island of Saint-Barthélemy on the horizon. A fine photo stop and a quiet swim.
6. Philipsburg — 3:15pm
The Dutch capital, a very different feel from Marigot:
- Front Street and its duty-free shops (jewellery, electronics, spirits);
- the long Great Bay beach and the seafront boardwalk;
- the white-and-green Courthouse, the town’s emblem.
On busy cruise-ship days the town is packed and parking is hard: park on the edge and walk. We contrast the two towns in French Side or Dutch Side.
7. Maho Beach — 4:30pm
On the way back, the essential stop to watch planes skim the beach just before landing at Princess Juliana Airport. Check the arrivals board posted in the beach bars: most long-haul traffic tends to land in the early afternoon, but confirm locally. Never hold on to the fence during a departure — it’s all explained in Maho Beach Plane Spotting.
8. The Lowlands at sunset — 5:30pm
Finish at Baie Longue or Baie Rouge, on the western peninsula, for sunset facing Anguilla. Then back to Marigot in about ten minutes, for dinner.
Variation: add Pic Paradis
If you leave very early (7:30am), slot in Pic Paradis between Marigot and Grand Case: 20 minutes up, the best panorama on the island, cooler air and few people in the morning. Details in Pic Paradis: The Best View. Add about an hour to the day.
Practical tips
- Adapt the order to your accommodation; the loop works both ways.
- Anticipate congestion at Marigot and on the Simpson Bay – Cole Bay corridor at the end of the day, and swing-bridge openings at Simpson Bay — see Driving in Saint-Martin.
- Leave nothing visible in the car at beach stops.
- A comfortable, air-conditioned, slightly raised car makes the day far better — see the fleet.
