At 424 metres (1,391 ft), Pic Paradis is the highest point in Saint-Martin. On a clear day you take in the whole island and its neighbours — Anguilla, Saba, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint Kitts and Nevis. It’s the “panorama” excursion you shouldn’t miss, and it’s done almost entirely by car, which makes it accessible to everyone.
Where Pic Paradis is
The peak sits at the centre of the island, on the French side, above the hamlet of Rambaud, between Marigot and Grand Case. It crowns the Mornes range, which separates the windward coast (Orient Bay, Cul-de-Sac) from the leeward coast (Marigot, Baie Nettlé).
Getting there by car
From the main road (D38), head toward Colombier and then Loterie Farm, and follow the “Pic Paradis” signs. The paved road runs through the hamlet of Rambaud, then climbs in switchbacks to a small flat area near the telecom antennas at the top.
Allow: 15–20 minutes from Marigot or Grand Case, about 30 from Orient Bay.
The state of the road
It’s a narrow mountain road, with tight switchbacks and a steep final kilometre, no barrier or road markings. It’s driveable in a normal car in dry weather, but:
- after rain the surface gets slippery and small rockfalls can appear;
- passing is hard: crawl on the bends, tap the horn as you approach blind corners, and use the few pull-outs to let others by;
- the end of the climb is steep: a low gear and some ground clearance help. An SUV or crossover from our fleet is noticeably more reassuring here;
- avoid the climb at night: there’s no lighting, and the view is only worth it in daylight.
If the weather is poor or you’re not comfortable on mountain roads, park lower down near Loterie Farm and walk up a trail.
Where to park
A small dirt area near the summit holds a few cars, beside the technical installations. It fills quickly by mid-morning in high season — arrive before 10am. Leave nothing visible in the cabin: the spot is isolated.
The viewpoints
Two built viewpoints offer complementary panoramas:
- one toward the west and south: Marigot, Baie Nettlé, the Simpson Bay lagoon, the Lowlands, and Anguilla on the horizon;
- the other toward the east: Orient Bay, Cul-de-Sac, Pinel Island, Le Galion, and on a clear day Saint-Barthélemy.
Morning light is best: softer, less heat haze, clouds still clinging to the neighbouring peaks. In the late afternoon the colours are lovely but the road then descends into dusk — leave before sunset.
The hiking trails
Several trails set off from the parking area and from Loterie Farm, through dry forest and the humid ridge forest:
- a short loop (20–30 minutes) around the summit;
- longer paths that drop down toward Loterie Farm, Colombier or Rambaud (1 to 2 hours);
- the path linking the two viewpoints.
Bring closed shoes, water, a hat, and set off early to beat the midday heat. Trails can be muddy and slippery after rain.
Combine it with Loterie Farm
At the foot of the peak, Loterie Farm is a private forest estate: a tree-top adventure course and zip lines through the canopy, marked hiking trails, a restaurant and a spring-fed pool. It’s the natural complement to a morning at Pic Paradis, especially with children or teenagers. Allow half a day if you do both.
You can also add Pic Paradis to the start of our one-day island tour.
